Though I am a big fan of novels, but Prayaag Akbar’s latest novel – Mother India still caught my attention. I found it to be a truly captivating and thought-provoking novel. The story is set in contemporary Delhi and follows the lives of two young people, Mayank and Nisha, as they try to make a decent living in the bustling city. Here’s more from the book:
Glimpses of Mother India by Prayaag Akbar
Mayank works in a dingy basement studio for a right-wing content creator. Despite having a middling education, he is determined to make something of himself. Nisha, on the other hand, has recently moved to Delhi from a small town in the hills. She works as a salesgirl, selling expensive Japanese chocolates in an upscale mall. Their lives take an interesting turn when Mayank stumbles upon Nisha’s Instagram profile. Enamored by her presence online, he creates a video clip for his studio that ends up having significant consequences for both of them.
The novel brilliantly captures the essence of what it means to be young and alive in today’s India. It explores how technology creates connections between people, often without their explicit consent, and how these connections can have both positive and negative effects. The book also delves into the normalization of violence and immorality in everyday life, making it a powerful reflection on modern society.

The title of the book is itself catchy, as it is the name of the classic Hindi film. However, probably that is the only thing in common with the film that the book has. It seems to be a contemporary book with a contemporary plot which explores a modern society that is today ruled by virtual connections and social media. I am sure that the book will make for a great read.
